What to Do Before Anyone Arrives

How fast do crews need to be on site?

Same day, ideally within hours. Mold can begin within 24 to 48 hours and materials keep absorbing water the whole time.

Can our maintenance team just use a wet vacuum?

For very small spills, sometimes. For anything larger, shop vacuums leave most of the water in the pad, slab and wall cavities.

Should we turn on the building HVAC to help dry it out?

Not before it has been checked. If water reached ductwork or the system is spreading contaminated air, running it makes matters worse.

What if the water is from sewage?

Treat it as contaminated: keep people out, do not use fans that spread aerosols, and have it handled with the right protection and disposal.
